Do they perform the work themselves or sub it out?  

One of the secrets of the industry is that the firm you hire may not be the firm that does the work.  So, it's best to know up front who does what.  

If all the people in this firm are technical people, they may not have a person designated for office management.  This can lead to delays in emails & call returns.  So, its best to know before you hire.  

Can this firm help you 6 months down the road? 

Environmental consulting firms have specialties.  It would be in your best interest to work with an environmental consulting firm that can not only help you today but also has the capacity to help you further down the road.  

What is their process of project management?

You should be able to gauge by the response to this question if they have actually thought of this topic.  If it sounds like they're not prepared for this question - it's best to look elsewhere.  

Are they reactive or proactive? 

Some firms will only speak when spoken to!  Others will provide you with an update every step of the way.  Think about what your preference is and make sure your environmental firm can deliver.
